According to the AKC breed standard, the height of males varies from 24 to 26 inches at the withers; females should stand from 22 to 24 inches. Every dog gives a definite impression of masculinity or femininity, according to the sex. These dogs are deep-bodied, with smooth outlines, massive withers, and large head. The neck of these dogs is long enough to provide a typical carriage of the head a little higher than the top of the shoulders. To provide for free and quick movement, these dogs have a capacious chest and very massive shoulders. The forequarters are a little longer than hindquarters, so the back looks slightly sloping.
