The breed was established in Germany where it evolved from herding dogs that were used to tend and protect sheep. The father of the breed is Rittmeister Max von Stephanitz, who was the first who began selective breeding and founded a club dedicated to the breed. The association was founded in 1890. These dogs quickly gained the popularity thanks to their abilities to learn quickly.
