The breed was very popular but when World War I broke out in 1914, all German things became taboo; even German language courses were dropped from school curriculum. The fate of the German Shepherd was undetermined. Then, the name was changed to Alsatian in order to save the breed. The name was changed by the American Kennel Club, which registered the breed in 1912. When the war was over, the breed got its original name though nowadays it is still used sometimes.

German Shepherds of today differ much from the original breed standard in appearance, health, working abilities and temperament. Only in the former East Germany, there exists a type that adheres closely to the old standard. These canines are larger and darker than modern breed lines. The old type is used for sheep herding – the original function of the breed. Shepherds of this type are praised for their strenght, agility, and working abilities. They are adapted to cold climate and lack many health disorders the modern types are prone to. They are not recommended as pets, because they are very independent and difficult to train.
