Prior to obtaining a puppy of this breed, think twice about the responsibility ot implies. Being very energetic and intelligent, these creatures need much interaction and attention. If left alone, a puppy will likely develop health and temperament problems. There are several types within the breed developed for specific tasks. Not all types of this breed can make reliable family pets. Only the international show line and the North American show line are suited for the role of family pets; the international working line is designed for performing difficult tasks and is not suited for serving as a family companion.

The hound evolved from herding hounds used to tend and protect sheep and over time the breed became extremely popular, especially as guard, police and military hounds. They were first brought to Australia between 1923 and 1929. Despite import bans once imposed because the breed was believed to be too vicious, the hound remains one of the most popular breeds around the world.
